Mohaine Desert by VonStreff Mohaine Desert by VonStreff
How do you make a desert which is described as "absolutely featureless" interesting? This one went very quickly, but I'm not too happy with it. I guess it does look like the "apotheosis of all deserts" as described in the Dark Tower. Completely painted, no textures used.

*Edit* Okay, I've added Roland and Jake, as well as increased contrast and minor color change.

For some odd reason i have always imagined it to have white sand/stone and fierce blue sky but this version is also good.
PS
Small figures are Jake and Roland?

Ah yep. Yeah, blasted white would be good, with a searing sky, extreme heat. Maybe I'll paint you a version of that. :D Yep, Jake and Roland.

This is very cool. It adds a great amount of understanding to the scale of the desert in The Dark Tower, like you said. And honestly, at first, I thought this was CGI. I think it is very well done.

Sure! I am slowly reading thru that series right now and that is definitely in my head as I read it. The scale is great.

I like this one...the figures add scale and depth and I like the general palette. The foreground is nicely done. I think you went a little overboard on the dust and it could be toned down a bit. Couple of suggestions using reference to help: while the desert is featureless that doesn't mean you can't play with with pattern, lighting and perspective; and the sky doesn't have to be featureless. Check out these links of images (mostly salt flats I think, which are really featureless)

Thanks for the feedback and great reference images. I'll revisit this over the next week and change a few things. Thanks!

Looks good! Absolutely featureless, I suppose, is interesting in it's nothingness. Sort of contradictory! Are the books good? You seem to be a fan!

Just an idea, if I could be so bold - the absolutely featureless desert could be portrayed through the eyes of a sufferer lost there? So, mirages fading in the distance? I suppose, as with all things, it depends on our interpretation:)

Yeah, it was a challenge. I think I might just add more detail in the foreground. The series is okay, quite violent and adult in parts though. Thanks for all the comments!

Looks rely good, it captures how the desert is meant to be, barren and lifeless. The animal skeleton also makes me feel like this place will be my end :D.

Oh YEAH! Recognised it straight away. Try bringing the dunes into focus to give the image a few more details.
It's probably not a good example but my I "tried" to do it with my <img src="[link]" alt="Porta of Levitas Pius" /> picture

Thanks man. Yeah, SK says the dunes are miles away. :) I think I might add Roland and Jake (you know, silhouettes in the distance), and I'll add more detail in the middle area...

What if you had the tin shed place in the background, Where he finds Jake.

I plan to do that as a separate painting, but thanks for the idea.
